Been a while..

Posted by Chris Murphy On March - 1 - 2010

Its been a while since I’ve posted. Not sure how many people actually follow this  but I figured I would say hello and give some updates on everything. The wife and I unfortunately still havent found the space in our schedule to start booking again. I REALLY miss the local scene and booking. I really hope that we can get back into it. Work seems to be the big hurdle to get over right now. Things the last few weeks have been really good screen printing wise. If your band or your business or friends band etc needs T-shirts please send them our way :) The more we can earn  printing the more time we can take off from work and  start booking again :)

(If you were curious while I am typing this I am listening to EYENINE (www.myspace.com/eyenine) Honestly I hate almost all rap/hip hop, or rather anything on the radio or mainstream. If you havent heard eyenine go take a listen)

Other than the snow we had the other day I am really getting excited about spring coming. I’m not looking forward to getting back to landscaping season but I am looking forward to better weather and enjoying life outside. I am also looking forward to grabbing the camera and getting out to the Rochester skate park to do some photo sessions. Everyone down there was great and fun to shoot.

Something AWESOME happened the other day when the wife and I were shopping at Goodwill. I discovered they had a large format Epson 2200 printer for sale. Came with new in the package ink and the kicker…. it was only $20. Normally this printer is $400 used and sold for about $800 new.  So you might be asking.. yeah thats a good deal… but why would I care? well its large format so it means i can start printing screens  that are 13×17 (full shirt) I still have to save up some more cash to get the attatchments on my press to actually print the images on the shirts… the hurdle of having the cash to buy the printer is bypassed though .. which is huge. Such a blessing.  I brought the printer home and did a few cleaning runs and tested it out. The printer is perfect. Such a good score.

Well, I think that about covers any new developments in the Life of Chris and Megan from Tiny Giant.  I’ll try to start updating things more often :) Work and a recent addiction to Call of Duty MW2 (ps3) have side tracked me from updating the site and getting things done.  The playstation network has a problem and is down so I had nothing better to do .. So now you get to read this :)

Thanks again for all the support! Take care! Keep it Brootal and Post some comments!

Well… The Alley was fun while it lasted!

Posted by Chris Murphy On September - 13 - 2009

Sadly Friday was the last show at the alley. There is a slight possibility that we might be able to do shows there periodically, but the price that the owners of Dover Bowl want from everyone is probably not attainable. They kept mentioning a $15 door that would include some drinks/food etc.. but that would make it impossible for alot of people to come to the show.. I’m about keeping this cheap so that bands can get great crowds and expose new people to their music all the time. I’m not in the shows for the money and need to find a venue with the same heart, a heart for the local music scene and to be able to give everyone a fun save enviornment to hang out and have fun. I’ll be hunting around in the next couple weeks for a new spot. Its sad that The Alley will probably just become an empty room rather than an awesome place for everyone to go to shows. Sad news aside, my spirits are high and I’m curious to see what I find for a new home for Tiny Giant shows.  Keep an eye on the blogs, tweets and myspace bulletins so you can know when our next show will be.

Enough Said kicked the night off right. TONS of movement, its really a testament to the talent on stage when everyone in the club is on their feet and rushing the stage. These guys now how to put on an awesome show.  This will probably be their last show for a while  from I hear as they will be taking a little break. I’m excited to see what these guys have to offer in the future and look forward to future shows with them!

Mourn The Loss started their night by giving away a slew of t-shirts and cd’s. Being their last show they figured they would give away all their swag. It was awesome seeing everyone wearing their shirts for their last show. They had a core-tastic set. I dont think we’ve had them at one of shows before and I’m sad that we haven’t. They brought a few new kids to The Alley that would have loved the shows we’ve done in the past. I hope the best of luck to all the guys in Mourn The Loss and with any new endeavors or bands any of them start up in the future.

By Way of Blood seemed to have alot of fun at this show. I know the guys really liked the venue and we are all sad to the end of the Alley. I decided to stand on the sidelines and put the camera down for their set this week. Last week one fight broke out during their set and I figured it would probably be better safe than sorry and keep an eye on things. everything went fine  I did notice a couple good solid connections in the pit but luckily everyone was stable enough to shake it off. One girl got clocked upside the head really good, tough girl.. no tears. just got up and  all was good.  These guys know what hardcore is all about, good times, good music and having fun.

Unfortunately, I had to go talk to the owner of the bowling alley while Trials played their set. Not only did I miss taking pics but I missed almost their whole set. The talk was unproductive and really just confirmed what I thought was going through the owners head… The club wanted more money.  lol I should have stayed and watched Trials. Sorry guys!

The Summoned was last up on the list and totally blew me away. Seemed the hardcore kids weren’t digging their style but they were all masters at their instruments. The Drummer was in one hand single stroke rolls and was equally as good with both hands. My attention was drawn to him most of the set just because of his utter speed and technical prowess. The rest of the band was great too, fast technical licks and brootal metal grooves. Its sad the kids didnt stick around for them. I’l definitely have them up again on a night when its more metal than core.

There was a little confusion between Bigfoot and myself on the time they would be playing. They were supposed to go on last but thought that they were supposed to go on last of the all ages night. So they promoted all week for everyone to come to the all ages side of the night. So.. I let them play the all ages side of the night. I wish we were on the same page about that so the kids would have known to stick around.  They always are good for an awesome show. Kevin was on a roll with 9-11 jokes in between songs.  Fuel injected Suicide Machine is usually in my head for a few days after seeing them. If you havent had the chance to catch Bigfoot.. go see them.

A Minor Revolution played last. I guess the night was  mixed up a little communications wise since I thought White Rabbit was supposed to show up and play.. but I guess I might have been mistaken. The guys in A Minor Revolution are great guys who play awesome originals and punk covers. They don’t play the overplayed radio pop punk stuff. They play the good stuff. The stuff you wont hear much on the radio but wish you had. They are tight, and put on a great show.  Hopefully i can get them into one of the hardcore shows.. I think everyone would like them.

Thanks again to everyone who  was a part of the work I did at The Alley. The shows were awesome, fun and I’m going to miss the setting. The room was huge and perfect for our scene. I’ll be hunting in the next couple weeks for a new home for Tiny Giant shows. My goals will be the same , to find a great venue where I can keep the door at $5 without sacrificing show quality all that much. If you are reading this and have a place to do shows, by all means contact me.  I would like to keep it in the Dover/Rochester area.

I’ll see you all soon! take care and as always Keep it Brooootal!

Keep The Alley Alive!!

Posted by Chris Murphy On September - 8 - 2009

“i just recieved an email from one of the owners of Dover bowl. Appearantly they aren’t making the funds they had hoped off of food/drink/bowling from our crowd. Its possible that one of three things might happen.

A. They may tell us we cant use the room any more. (this would suck)
B. They might ask me to raise the door to $7 so they can get a cut to cover their costs. (wouldn’t suck as much)
C. They might ask for more of a room charge to me which will drive my show price back up to $10 .. which i really hope doesn’t happen. (would suck a little more than option B)

Just figured I would keep you all in the loop. This is our scene and we need to keep it going and growing… most of all I want to keep it CHEAP so more people can come and more bands can be exposed.

If you guys come this week and decide to eat please think of the club and order food/drinks there at the club rather than running to local stores and such to get food. Order it in the venue so they can keep track and see that we are helping them out.. I really don’t want to lose this venue, its probably one of the better things to happen to our scene in a long time. The Owners have been great to us thus far giving us lots of freedom in the room, great discounts on food and killer discounts on bowling. Please  if you can afford it  go bowling or buy some food, drink.. whatever. this room rocks I would prefer to be able to keep things at $5 and keep shows going for all eternity lol. Also last week a table was broken and there was a ton of trash in the parking lot that my wife and I had to clean up. The club/building must be respected, take some ownership, this is YOUR scene  respect it and help it grow!

Tiny Fest, Huge Show!

Posted by Chris Murphy On September - 5 - 2009

By far the craziest show we’ve had.  Tons of movement with some retarded pit drama that I had to breakup as punches were being thrown.  If you get hit in the pit..deal with it..its your fault for being in a pit! The night was jam packed with bands, 9 total. Everyone was moving around right off the start since The Nasty had to open the show due to work commitments. There were a couple downfalls to the night however. A table was discovered to be broken while cleaning up after the show and there was a ton of trash out in the parking lot that we had to clean up. If you went to the show last night, please try  to remember that we need to be repectful of the club so they will let us continue to  do our shows there. All ages venues are fading fast and we dont want to lose this one.  Other than the table and the trash the rest of the night was a blast.

Like I mentioned, The Nasty kicked things off because Tim had to work immediately after his set. He literally ran off the stage when they were done, jumped in his car and shot off to work. They had another fill in bass player , I think this is their 3rd fill in. He did a great job and seemed to know the songs pretty well. Luckily we had a nice crowd right off the bat and they had kids to play for. There was a ton of movement in the crowd, as there usually is when The Nasty plays.

Second up was In My Head, formerly known as Homerun. They had a new bass player too.. or maybe this was the first time their real bass player could make it.. I’m not quite sure.  I was pleased to see that the excitement didn’t dwindle down when The Nasty left the stage. In My Head did a great job of keeping up the pace and keep the movement in the pit. It helps when half of the kids in the crowd are friends. Their set was short as usual but ferocious and well put together.

Enough Said shared equipment with In My Head so they ended up playing next.  The singer from Enough Said does a great job of connecting with the crowd and getting them off their lazy arses and in the pit.  Their vocalists voice seemed a little tired toward the end of the set but they delivered a show that was like a kick to the chest.  Tons of stage rushing and sing alongs when they played Neighborhood Slut  at the end of their set.  They gave away patches, made by yours truely, and some demos. I saw a bunch of kids grab the demos during and after their set. Enough Said will be back next week too :)

Chasing Dying Dreams jumped on the show last minute after a band dropped the night before. Last time they played no one seemed to move for them. This show was the complete opposite. Everyone was moving around for them, strage rushing and singing along. I think i got some of the best pics of them yet during this show. They played a couple new songs too that were great. One of them had that dirty south hardcore sound which I am very fond of.

Hope Lane Is a Dead End had the task of bringing the kids back inside after CDD played. As usual everyone went outside between bands. I think the empty room discouraged them a little on the start but after a minute or so into the first song  everyone came back inside. Its always good when a band can draw the crowd back inside. They had an awesome set as usual. I love their little change ups in the songs, like the surfer rock interlude in one song. A bunch of talented guys and a vocalist with a pretty good screaming range. They spent the earlier part of the night at the bowling alley ripping it up on the lanes. They were psyched about the idea of a bowling alley/venue.  Hopefully we’ll get them back again soon.

I felt bad for  A Breath Beyond Broken last week because of our terrible turnout, so I offered for them to come back for a second week in a row. I was very happy to offer them a much larger crowd. I had a bunch of people come up to me after their set to say they really liked them and was glad to see a girl fronted band done right.  Girl fronted bands are far and few between, its good to see one with killer talent.  They certainly will be regulars to the alley and hold their own among the hardcore and metal crowd.

I first met Blackout Frenzy on Return to the Pit (RTTP)  though a thread I posted looking for bands for shows. I try to post on RTTP here and there to get bands from different areas some exposure in our scene. They had some technical difficulties off the bat with the wireless for the bass dying rather fast but after squaring that away quickly really set the pace. Great guitar licks,  lots of energy and really talented. Unfortuneatly , probably because most of the night was hardcore, alot of the kids didnt hang around for them , being a metal band. It bugs me when people music snob bands. They traveled a while to be heard and should have to play for less of a crowd. Anywho they still put on an awesome show and didn’t once complain about some of the kids being outside. I give them big props for that. We’ll have to get them back on a metal night and get them some movement!

By Way of Blood really got things moving with their show. Some kid picked up and threw a chair (lol don’t do that again) and tension started rising in the pit. Luckily  I was able to snap some great pics of them and their interaction with the crowd. They were fast paced and in your face hardcore. Tons of two steppin and thrashing around, circle pit and all. These guys really know how to get everyone moving. I put my camera down a couple times to make sure I could pay attention keep people safe. BWOB is  coming back next week  with enough said, trials, spit your game, mourn the loss etc. Its going to be another awesome show.

True to form Word For Word ignited the room. Pretty much as soon as things got started, things started getting crazy. I was only able to shoot for a few min before I had to start doing some crowd control. First off we had some pit drama that resulted in Tino from The Nasty get punched in the face, lightly since I caught the guys arm as he threw the punch. From what I gather someone was a little angry after getting hit in the mosh pit. If you are in a mosh pit and you get hit.. you are the only one to blame.. you were in a freaking mosh pit.. get over it. I hate how people get bent out of shape because they got hit. If you arent stable enough to deal with it,  get out of the pit. Anywho, word for word had an awesome set and the crowd was really really pumped for them. I think they are starting to get a more involved fan base in Dover after helping me really shape the scene around here. They are awesome guys and I am always glad to have them. Johnny is always full of energy which translates nicely to a lively crowd. Despite the drama before and after their set, everyone had a blast. Its nice to see some good activity for these guys.  Just try to remember to respect the club and the things that belong to club. Respect each other and leave your egos outside of the pit.

We are building a scene, we wont let it fail.  These nights are the nights we must prevail.

See you guys next week! its going to be a sick show. Bring your dancing shoes!

Just found a couple videos from friday on youtube

Posted by Chris Murphy On August - 31 - 2009

I was checking through you tube as I normally do here and there when I see someone video taping at my shows.. waiting for the vid to surface. I found the video that was taken of Potsy friday night. I love it when people video the shows and throw them up on youtube because it gives me something interesting to put up on the site. The sound and video quality on these videos arent bad either. Kudos to “MissScarlett027″ for doing the video. I noticed when she took the video at the show she placed the camera on a table too… I hate shakey video.. so thanks for doing that! They were super talented. The bass player actually majored in upright bass in college! The band was tight and, for me at least, felt like a pearljam/rush hybrid without a singer. I really enjoyed their set it was progressive with some great groves. Here are the videos from www.youtube.com

Where were you?!

ARMS AGAINST THE SEA || THE ALLEY|| 8-28-09

Tonight was the worst turnout yet.. but I understand. For some of you, school started this week .. for others .. its the last week free before school. In either case the show was awesome and the 18 people that did show up got to hog up all the fun. There were some issues with a couple bands that caused them to drop from the night but all in all the show still went great. I leared a valueable lesson on this show. Never buy batteries from Dollar Tree. MY flash literally was able to take 4 pictures and the batteries were dead. No flash meant I had to use either the body flash or use the 1.8 50mm lens. I opted for the 50mm. I took a few good pictures but with the low light I had to up my ISO and the pics resulted in some noisiness. Oh well. Moral of the story.. you get what you pay for. Don’t trust dollar tree batteries.
Arms Against a Sea put on a great set. They were the only band that showed up on time and in this instance it didnt really work to their favor.. they ended up starting things off since they were the only band there with equipment. The good thing was the 18 people that did show  happened to be there at the start of things so they did have a little crowd to play for. Their set, as usual was great.  I can’t wait to get them back. I did a shirt trade with them to get one of their shirts for myself :)

A Breath Beyond Broken ended up playing this show after Elyson requested that I have them play. I’m very very glad I agreed. They were explosive and well put together. Chick singer with two screamers/backup vocals. Really well balanced and the lead vocalist was great. This makes the 2nd band with female lead vocals  that I enjoyed listening to.  Cavendar played a few weeks back (female lead)  Its great to see the scene has found some great female leads.. they are hard to find in this circle. Most female leads are painful to listen to and are awkward on stage. The singer from A Breath Beyond Broken  belonged on that stage. Great stuff. I invited them to come back and play  next week at the Tiny Fest.. I hope they decide to do it!

Elyson. Elyson used 99% of A Breath Beyond Broken’s gear. Their set was pretty good. The vocalist decided to climb the stacks and jump off of the top of them. It was interesting. I was surprised he got away with it without the sound guy giving him an earful. They did a Heavy cover of some Eminem song to start things off… It was pretty good.  I think if there were more kids there they probably would have moved around a little for them.

The Speed of Film ended up playing last since Nemes had to drop of last minute as a result of some band internal conflicts. Unfortunately for The Speed of Film the room cleared out pretty good before/during their set. One great thing about TSOF is they put on a great show regardless of what is happening in the room.  I tried to get some different angles and pictures this time around since I shot them recently, a couple weeks back. They decided to do a shirt order with me .. which is pretty cool, Looking forward to doing their shirts.

Potsy was the only band from the 21+ side of the night that didn’t cancel on me last minute. I was blown away by the talent in this group. Growing up with a drummer for a father usually my focus is on the drummer. Potsy came flying out of the gate with awesome progressive groves and technical time signatures. They were tight and fantastic. A fairly good crowd came to check them out. 100% instrumental set but thoroughly interesting. I really hope to get them back over here at some point in the future when I know I have a good crowd already coming.

Check out the Flickr photos from the night www.flickr.com.photos/tinygiantclothing

next week is TINY FEST!! $5 for probably 10+ bands and its ALL Ages ALL NIGHT! come check it out its going to be awesome. Checkout the shows page to get more details!
